Cread L. Ray, Jr. (b. 1931)

Cread L. Ray, Jr. was born March 10, 1931, in the town of Waskom, Texas, located in Harrison County eighteen miles southeast of the county seat of Marshall. After graduating from Waskom High School in 1948, he entered Texas A&M University, where he served on the Corp staff, was named Outstanding Cadet, and earned a B.B.A. degree in 1952. Following his graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force and fought in the Korean War. He enlisted in the Air Force Reserves after the war, and retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1987. Following his active military service, he entered The University of Texas School of Law, where he earned a J.D. in 1957. He was admitted to the Texas bar the same year.
Ray returned home to Harrison County to begin his legal career with the firm of Smith and Hall in Marshall. A year later he opened his own firm of Taylor and Ray. He left private practice when he was elected judge of Harrison County in 1959, serving in the position until 1961. From 1961 to 1966 he returned to private practice. That year he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives. Following two terms in the Legislature, Ray was elected to a seat on the Sixth Court of Appeals at Texarkana in 1970, was reelected in 1976, and served until 1980.
Ray was elected to the Texas Supreme Court in 1980, took office in November of that year, and served until December 31, 1990.
Following his supreme court service, Ray returned to private law practice at Austin, where he specializes in appellate, oil and gas, and personal injury law. He is married with five children and one stepchild.
